While everyone has been looking forward to (or being anxious about) having our Amazon orders delivered by low-flying drones, we have to wait for a while. The technology just isn’t ready, and honestly, neither are many of its customers. Instead, the major revolutionary technology in shipping that is transforming Amazon isn’t revolutionary 21st century technology at all.
The game changer for the the multi-billion dollar ecommerce company is the bicycle (and the white delivery van).
Amazon announced in New York City it would be trialing parcel delivery by bicycle. Even more significant, in both the US and UK, the ecommerce giant has now set up its own delivery van network, with its own vehicles and drivers (many have seen them called Prestige before).
The majority of its shipments will be still delivered by FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc., though analysts say that Amazon’s decision to deliver some of its own packages without using a delivery service will help to encourage consolidation and restructure a jam-packed postal market.
