Thought I’d mention a common issue we see when attempting to print a FedEx Air Waybill (AWB) label on a Zebra barcode printer.
Symptom:
When printing a FedEx Air Waybill on a Zebra printer, you may notice that the message “INVALID-C” prints (see figure 1 below) where a barcode is expected (see figure 2 below).
Solution:
Troubleshooting can take a while – it’s tough to pinpoint the source of the problem: is this message imbedded in the label image produced by FedEx or does the Zebra printer produce this error message? Hopefully you will find the following useful…
- The “Invalid-C” message is created by the Zebra printer, not by FedEx.
- FedEx labels contain numerous barcode symbologies, including PDF-417, UCC/EAN CODE 128, UCC/EAN CODE 128 “SSCC-18”. The printer is not able to interpret the specific barcode symbology being used to construct the AWB label. Typically all that is needed is to update the firmware on your Zebra printer.
